The Return of Manufacturing
Made in USA grows in Seattle

Made in China. Made in Taiwan. There's a
good chance electronics and toys under the
Christmas tree were not made in the U.S.A. In
the 1960s, nine of every 10 products
Americans bought for the holidays were made
in the United States. Today more than half of
what is purchased is made outside of the
country. That irritates a Seattle woman, who
learned first-hand how challenging it can be to
create a product in the United States.
Made in America: ‘We’re In !
Thousands of you responded to our
Made in America Christmas challenge
with two words: “We’re in!”
You shared your Made in America
stories and offered your gift
suggestions.

The Wall family in Dallas found a shirt
for dad at Brooks Brothers, and the
Tokarz family, also from Dallas,
scoured the stores for American goods.

Businesses across the country have
seen families on the hunt for American-
made products and are taking notice.
WHAT ARE YOU PUTTING IN YOUR MOUTH?
I got a call from Cheryl from Costco the
other day, where she asked, "Do you
need anything while I'm here?"

I thought for a minute about the things
I might need ... Costco can often be
like a Christmas catalogue for me, so I
tried to be conservative.

"I need toothpaste", I exclaimed,
"American made."  "Just what brand
might that be?", she said.

I said, "Aqua Fresh"

Changing the way we think

NEW YORK (AP) -- Which food
revelation was more shocking this
week?
Did it blow you away that low levels of
a fungicide that isn't approved in the
U.S. were discovered in some orange
juice sold here? Yawn. Or was it the
news that Brazil, where the
fungicide-laced juice originated,
produces a good portion of the orange
pulpy stuff we drink? Gasp!

While the former may have sent prices
for orange juice for delivery in March
down 5.3 percent earlier this week, the
latter came as a bombshell to some
"Buy American" supporters. But that's
not the only surprise lurking in
government data about where the food
we eat comes from.

Apple juice

America?
Think again.
What's in your orange
juice?
Maybe or maybe not carbendazim, a
fungicide linked to liver tumors in animals.
After receiving reports from Coca-Cola
(which produces Minute Maid and Simply
Orange juices) and PepsiCo. (Tropicana)
that low levels of the substance had been
detected, the FDA began testing samples.
The US now imports much of its OJ, and
the fungicide is legal in Brazil, where much
of the juice is coming from. Thus far, three
out of more than 30 shipments have been
cleared, according to the LA Times.
Meanwhile, orange juice futures have
been all over the map, hitting record highs
and then plummeting over the course of
the past week. (Adding to the volatility,
freezing temperatures in Florida have hurt
the crops there.)
